Let's be Having Yule!

Sat down last night to watch some proper Telly and was rewarded with the lovely Delia Smith doing Christmas again from the house where she has lived for the last 40 years.

Having watched Delia in the 70's doing ordinary cooking she doesn't seem to have changed a lot and there was something still quite appealing about her sensible matter-of-fact approach. The fact that she didn't give out measurements for the recipes so one would be more likely to have to buy her new book meant that we were watching an hour long book advert but it is all for a good cause. A new front four for the Canaries.

It certainly made a refreshing change from Nigella Saatchi gurning and giggling with her pretend friends in a film studio and letting us all think she is a midnight feaster. Yer right.

And Delia will always be Mrs cool to me because she baked this:

No-ee! no way! Never mind what St Delia's baked in the past, I can never read one of her recipes without wanting to throw the entire book out a window. She is BOSSY and DIDACTIC and TOTALLY HUMORLESS. God only knows how she got on with the Stones....
Team Nigella!

Macy: Ooooh, little bit of controversy. Nigella's far too pouting and winsome and you know it's all an act. You should see Delia when she's had a couple of drinks...she's crazy!

Hence your very witty title.

Well looks quite sexy in the 70's pic - and seductively bursting out of her Canaries shirt even then.

Dave: Ah yes! You are of course referring to this.

Kaz: Yes she was keen to play two up front even then.

Did you know Fanny Cradock's real name was Phyllis Peachey, and that in 1983, according to Brewer's Rogues, Villains and Eccentrics (a book you might like to solicit Santa Claus for), she was done for shouting 'Dog's poo! at a driver and subsequently running him over.

I though police stations were always to be found in Letsby Avenue.

Christopher: She left a lasting legacy. Virtually all doughnuts now look like Fanny's.

I've got books by both Nigella and Delia. I like them both. Mind you, Fanny was fabulous. The way she used to order Johnny about - I don't think Delia is bossy, didactic and humourless, but Fanny was, in a vastly entertaining way. Most of her recipes didn't actually work anyway, but it didn't matter.

I can see where I'm going wrong with my cakes now.

Jonny was always getting told off for dipping his fingers in Fanny's batter, I seem to recall. What?

Doughnuts like Fanny's.....Rog what kinda women do you hang out with?

I'd rather watch Oz and Lily eat their dinner than Nigella.

The more I think about it the more infectiously repulsive this doughnut/Fanny comparison becomes and I really want to expunge it from my mind.

Did you mean ring doughnuts or jam ones?

Z: Didactic Delia v Fabulous Fanny! Fiiigghhhhtttt!!!!!

Richard: Yes, like Cher and Lily she also had the deeper voice. Poor old Johnny had a monocle as well.

Sarah: I have no idea. I accidentally watched a bit of Top Gear the other night.

Geoff: You'd have to not blink to catch Lily Wolfing down her Baker's Complete!

Christopher: Oh dear, I told you it was a lasting legacy. Start thinking of something else .... Jeremy Clarkson springs to mind.

Delia went a bit bonkers (not for the first time) with the last series - all mandarin segments and powdered mash. Good she's back to form.

Did you see the size of Nigella's larder in her last series? I'm thinking of booking it for my holidays.

Malc: You'd have to put up with Nigella sneaking in at midnight for a fudge delight.

That'll be Sticky Fingers covered then.
