Mystery Object!

We visited a PROPER antique Fair the other day in Long Melford and it was packed to the gills with PROPER antiques - and that was just the stall holders! (Only joking - I've just received my first bus pass in the post so am in no position to reel off age related quips).

Bought a couple of items to add a touch of class to our humble interweb emporium and had a fabulous lunch in the George at Cavendish where Autumnal Hugh was making his early presence felt. Suffolk is a lovely county all the year round.

Here is a a mystery object which I hope may fox you. It's Mahogany and it's Georgian so it is virtually antique in Mike's terms ;-)

P.s. Because if so, I'm slipping. I didn't see it.

How big is it? At the moment, I'm thinking parking rack for the rear wheels of two penny-farthings.

John: That's a Chimpanzee!

Pat: Good idea if the scale had been right.

Mike & Ann: Don't worry, Mike, this wasn't from Long Melford so your keen eye is as acute as ever.

Tim: Your idea is worth tuppence halfpenny!

Yes Mike is of course correct! It is indeed a cheese cradle or cheese coaster (they often had castors for whizzing up and down the table distributing half stiltons to the merry throng). Cheese was condidered an important part of daily diet in those days. One wonderes if in 200 years people will look back aghast at the consumption of broccoli in early 21st Century pre-Charlsiancamillian times. I do hope so.

I know I've already admired that photo of Cavendish on Twitter but I'm going to admire it again. It's lovely. We are spoiled for pretty villages here in Suffolk.
