Bottom Gear

I'm the first to admit that "Top Gear" took off stratospherically when Clarkson and his chums shook up the format and turned it into a worldwide ratings winner.

I have even been known to watch it on the odd occasion, although I quickly tire of the arrogance and smugness of the trio of "blokes" as they show off in a shed in front of a group of admirers whose combined annual income probably doesn't even come near what Jeremy trousers weekly. His superstar status has gradually made him feel invincible and untouchable, thinking he can publicly call Gordon Brown a "one eyed Scottish Git" and much worse within the protection of his fawning admirers. Like his other foot-faults, he believes that turning on the charm for a brief moment cancels everything out and he can get back to shovelling the money into his bank accounts.

Well, he may have taken much more of a body blow this week from the great Steve Coogan. Here's a taster talking about Richard Hammond:

"Richard has his tongue so far down the back of Jeremy's trousers he could forge a career as the back end of a pantomime horse. His attempt to foster some Clarkson-like maverick status with his "edgy" humour is truly tragic. He reminds you of the squirt at school as he hangs round Clarkson the bully, as if to say, "I'm with him". Meanwhile, James May stands at the back holding their coats as they beat up the boy with the stutter."

You can read Coogan's brilliant demolition job on Top Gear here.

Steve Coogan is 'spot-on' with his view. Clarkson, Hammond and May sound like a firm of accountants, and are just about as funny.

At least Coogan's a car enthusiast so the frustration comes from the heart. Clarkson & Co don't really come into my radar and I'm very happy about that. All those tweeters who moan about Daily Mail writers - we have freedom of speech and you don't have to read it.

Martin: Welcome! They are a bunch of accountants as far as I'm concerned.

Geoff: Yes, I must stop whinging about Chris Evans, Noel Edmonds, Jo Whiley, ..........zzzz

I've been unhappy with Clarkson ever since he refused to go along with the Trinny and Suzannah make-over. All they wanted him to do was to wear clothes that actually fitted him. Not difficult.

Afraid I don't know who this person is, but if you execrate him so it's certain he deserves it. On reading your title I imagined you were going to entertain us with a crisp post about Cycling Shorts I Have Worn. Another time, maybe?

Well said Rog. I used to like TG...it USED to be quite funny. Last night's prog was properly hateful. The Stunts were ludicrous and frankly childish. Clarkson is an freekin arse....He made Johnathan Ross young, edgy and intelligent. (Actualy I like JR!)

But it's a bit rich coming form Coogan, hardly known for his self-restraint. Still, good to see someone taking Clarkson on, can't stand the man.

It's a rock and a hard place for me. Can't stand Coogan, although his recent Trip was very good. Anyway, I wonder if he was just upset because they haven't invited him back as Star in a reasonably priced car? Not that I'm standing up for the Top Gear team you understand.
