Scruffs

I'm sure you were all glued to your TV on Sunday evening to see the lovely Jilly crowned "Best in Show" at Crufts. The first Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen to make it through in what has been criticised in the past as the biggest celebration of in-breeding outside the Royal Family.

Nobody could accuse a PBGV of being inbred, yet they all look so remarkably similar (although Lily is better looking than Jilly, it must be said). Most people ask us which mixture of breeds she is, assuming she's some kind of mutt. Now she will be recognized as a classic French Basset.

I hope Jilly's success won't mean lots of new dog owners queue up to buy one because they are not the easiest of dogs to own (Yes, back to me). You can't let them off their lead anywhere other than a tennis court and even then the people playing tennis normally get quite cross. She will run forever in a straight line (through hedges and across motorways) if let free and develops a sudden lapse of memory as to who her owners are.

But she IS lovely....

I hope Lilly's not going to get all grand and stuff now....

We were watching and I did say to Sir Bruin that I hoped the 'Lilly Dog ' would win. We noticed that there was also a Tibetan Terrier in the final too. What trend setters you are!

I did laugh when the commentator described PBGVs as "naughty as anything when off the lead." Understatement?

Lily is lovely : )
I was so pleased when one of her cousins won.

I want to know what breed the owner is.

That's all right, we have a tennis court that we never use.

Nota: If it goes to her head it'll be in one ear and out the other.

Liz: Thanks for cheering them on! I think "naughty" just about covers it.

Zig: Slightly different colouring but otherwise they all look the same. No point in a contest. You have quite a collection now.

Dina: Thames Estuary Mongrel.

Z: Lily, Holly and Annette! It could work.

Now I'm falling off my chair - so gorgeous - that second photo with the ears in the air is hilarious.
